Why I Don’t Start with Macros (and What I Focus on Instead)

Counting macros can be a powerful tool, but it’s not where I start with my clients to create food freedom, less overwhelm, and better long-term success.

Here’s the deal: macros aren’t the enemy. In fact, they’re important.

Knowing how your body uses protein, fat, and carbs is helpful. But when someone comes to me feeling exhausted, bloated, discouraged, or stuck in the all-or-nothing cycle, asking them to track every gram of food they eat usually makes things worse.

Why Macro Counting Can Backfire (At First)

For many women I work with, especially those juggling full lives and careers, counting macros can feel like a second job. It’s overwhelming, time-consuming, and can trigger perfectionism or shame if they don’t "get it right."

Too much change too fast usually leads to burnout and quitting. And the goal isn’t to follow another plan that fizzles out—it’s to build a way of eating that actually supports your life.

What I Focus on First

Instead of tracking macros from day one, we zoom out. My focus is on these foundational pillars:

  1. Crowding Out Ultra-Processed and Allergenic Foods
Let’s make room for the good stuff by reducing the stuff that’s keeping you stuck—the foods that spike blood sugar, trigger inflammation, and drain your energy.

  2. Whole, Nutrient-Dense Foods
Real food first. This includes quality proteins, healthy fats, fiber-rich plants, and hydration. This approach naturally regulates hunger, improves digestion, and stabilizes energy.

  3. Daily Rhythms
We work on meal timing (hello, fasting windows), sleep hygiene, and gentle movement—because it's not just about what you eat, but how and when you eat, too.

  4. Mindset Shifts
Letting go of the "I messed up so I might as well start over Monday" mindset is key. Food freedom starts in the mind, not in the macros.

When We Do Look at Macros

Once you’re feeling more in control and confident in your habits, we may zoom in on one macro: protein.

Most women are under-eating protein. Once we dial that in, energy, satiety, and muscle recovery all improve. And from there, if you’re feeling curious or want to go deeper, we can take a short snapshot of your overall macros—but only if it serves you.

If You Feel Stuck, Start Here

If you’re tired of the extremes and want a gentler, smarter way to reset, my 7-Day Fresh Start program is a perfect fit. We focus on whole foods, digestive rest, and simple daily practices (including fasting support) to help you feel better fast—without the mental gymnastics.

You don’t need another strict plan. You need a reset that meets you where you are and gives you tools that last. Click [HERE] to get started.
